If you are new to owning a home or business with a private septic system, you may be concerned about how to care for that system. Fortunately, our team at Dewey’s Septic and Grading is here to help you keep your septic system in excellent condition, so it continues to perform reliably. In this article, we will provide an overview of septic system maintenance to give you a place to get started.

Septic System Maintenance 101

  • Pumping – The most important part of septic system maintenance is septic tank pumping, a process that involves removing accumulated waste from the tank to empty it out and make room for more. Depending on the size of your tank and the number of people using your building, you may need to get your tank pumped as frequently as once a year or as infrequently as once every three years. Our team can assess your needs and determine the ideal pumping schedule for you.
  • Inspection – Another key part of septic system maintenance is to get your system inspected. We recommend scheduling a septic inspection once a year. Our team will examine the various parts of your system to make sure they are working properly, and we’ll give you a heads up if anything seems amiss. Septic problems are nasty, so we highly recommend getting your system checked every year so you can deal with any issues as soon as possible, before they get worse.
  • Proper Use – A third step in effective septic system maintenance involves using your system correctly. Make sure the only things entering your drains are water and waste—don’t put things like wipes, paper towels, food scraps, cooking fats or oils, or harsh chemicals down the drain, as these can clog or damage your septic system.
